Why Thales Still Matters

What the first philosopher can teach us about intellectual courage

Sometime in the sixth century BCE, in the prosperous Ionian city of Miletus on the coast of Asia Minor, a thinker named Thales began asking a question that would eventually become one of philosophy's deepest concerns: What is the world ultimately made of? We cannot reconstruct exactly how Thales himself formulated the question, because no complete work written by him survives. Much of what we know comes through later ancient writers who preserved traditions about his ideas, achievements, and investigations of nature.

What makes Thales important, therefore, is not simply a collection of doctrines attributed to him. His historical importance lies in the kind of question he came to represent. Rather than treating the structure of the cosmos as something that could only be explained through inherited stories about divine beings, Thales is traditionally associated with the attempt to find an underlying principle within nature itself. This approach became an important starting point for the tradition now known as Ancient Greek philosophy.

Thales is traditionally associated with the claim that water was the fundamental principle, or archê, of nature. To a modern reader this can sound like a primitive scientific hypothesis, and in one sense it was certainly not a correct account of physical reality. But judging Thales only by whether water really is the fundamental substance misses the philosophical importance of the proposal. The more significant development was the attempt to explain the enormous diversity of the natural world by searching for something fundamental beneath that diversity.

That question would outlive Thales by more than two thousand years. Philosophers would continue to ask whether reality has a single underlying substance, whether everything is ultimately material, whether change is fundamental, and whether the world possesses an intelligible order. In this sense, the question associated with Thales leads directly into the history of metaphysics: the philosophical investigation of being, reality, substance, causation, and what ultimately exists.

Why Did Philosophy Begin in Miletus?

Thales did not emerge from an intellectual vacuum. Miletus was one of the most important cities of ancient Ionia, a region on the western coast of Asia Minor that was deeply connected to Mediterranean trade. Merchants, sailors, mathematicians, and travelers moved through the region, bringing different customs, practical knowledge, astronomical observations, and stories about the natural world into contact with one another.

This environment matters because philosophical thinking develops within particular historical circumstances. The Greeks already possessed rich traditions of poetry and mythology. Homer and Hesiod offered accounts of gods, heroes, origins, and cosmic order. These traditions were not simply childish attempts at science; they were complex cultural frameworks through which people understood human life and the structure of the cosmos.

The significance of the Milesian thinkers is that they became associated with a different kind of explanatory project. Instead of asking only which divine powers were responsible for a phenomenon, they began asking what kind of principle could explain the phenomenon as part of an intelligible natural order. This should not be interpreted as a sudden rejection of religion. The boundary between mythology, religion, natural speculation, and philosophy was much less sharply defined in the sixth century BCE than it is today.

What changed was the style of questioning. Nature itself became something that could be investigated, compared, interpreted, and argued about. That shift is one reason the early Milesian thinkers occupy such an important place in histories of philosophy.

The Courage to Ask a Different Question

It is tempting to describe the rise of Greek philosophy as a simple movement from "myth" to "reason," as though people suddenly stopped believing in gods and began doing science. The historical reality was considerably more complicated. Thales and the other early Greek philosophers lived inside a religious culture, and their surviving intellectual traditions do not justify such a simple opposition.

The more interesting change was methodological. A philosophical explanation had to become something that could be questioned, challenged, compared with alternative explanations, and developed into an argument. Once a thinker proposed that some particular principle explained nature, another thinker could ask whether that principle was sufficient.

This is precisely what makes the Milesian tradition so interesting. Thales was traditionally associated with water. His successor, Anaximander, proposed something much more abstract: the apeiron, commonly translated as the Boundless, Unlimited, or Indefinite. Anaximenes then returned to a determinate physical principle, associating the origin of things with air and explaining transformation through processes such as condensation and rarefaction.

Their disagreements are more important than they might initially appear. Philosophy does not progress only when someone discovers the correct answer. It also progresses when one explanation creates a problem that another thinker attempts to solve. Thales' proposal could therefore be understood as the beginning of a conversation rather than the final answer to a cosmological question.

The next step in that conversation can be explored through Anaximenes of Miletus, whose theory of air represents another attempt to explain how a single underlying principle could account for the many different forms found in nature.

Why Did Thales Say That Water Was Fundamental?

The claim that water was the fundamental principle of nature is one of the most famous ideas associated with Thales. Yet there is an important historical limitation: Thales left no surviving philosophical treatise explaining his position in his own words. Later writers, particularly Aristotle, are among the sources through which this tradition reached us.

The Greek concept of archê is important here. The word can mean a beginning, origin, source, or governing principle. When early Greek philosophers searched for an archê, they were not necessarily asking the same question a modern chemist would ask when looking for an elementary particle. They were asking what fundamental principle could account for the existence and transformation of the natural world.

Water may have appeared to Thales, or to the later tradition that represented him, as a particularly powerful candidate because life, nourishment, growth, and the natural environment are deeply connected with moisture. Ancient sources give different explanations for why water was considered fundamental, and we should be cautious about presenting any one reconstruction as Thales' exact reasoning.

The philosophical significance of the claim is therefore broader than the literal proposition that everything is made of water. Thales was associated with the search for unity beneath apparent multiplicity. The world contains trees, animals, stones, clouds, rivers, stars, and human beings, yet the philosophical question asks whether this enormous diversity can ultimately be understood through something more basic.

That problem would eventually become central to metaphysical inquiry. Later philosophers would propose radically different answers, from the unchanging Being of Parmenides to Plato's Forms and Aristotle's substances and causes. The early question remained: what must reality fundamentally be like for the world we experience to exist?

Thales, Astronomy, and the Famous Eclipse

Thales is also remembered in ancient tradition for his interest in astronomy. One of the most famous stories comes from Herodotus, who reports that Thales predicted a solar eclipse during a conflict between the Medes and Lydians. The event is traditionally identified with the eclipse of 28 May 585 BCE.

The story is remarkable, but it requires historical caution. We do not possess a surviving account from Thales describing the method he used, and historians cannot establish with certainty how he could have made such a prediction. Later ancient accounts may also have simplified or embellished his reputation.

What can be said with greater confidence is that Thales became associated with the study of the heavens and with the broader Ionian interest in explaining celestial phenomena. Astronomy was philosophically important because the regular movement of the heavens offered an especially striking example of an apparently ordered natural world.

The story of the eclipse therefore matters even if we remain uncertain about the precise historical circumstances. It captures something central to the image of Thales preserved by later generations: a thinker trying to understand apparently mysterious events through patterns that could, at least in principle, be investigated and reasoned about.

Thales and the Origins of Mathematical Reasoning

Thales was also traditionally associated with mathematics and geometry. Ancient traditions credit him with several geometric insights, including results later connected with his name. However, as with his astronomy, the historical evidence is difficult to separate from later legend and mathematical tradition.

What makes the mathematical tradition significant is the connection between measurement, abstraction, and demonstration. Geometry transforms observations about physical objects into relationships that can be expressed more generally. A particular triangle or distance becomes an example of a mathematical relationship that can be reasoned about independently of the individual object.

This kind of abstraction belongs to a larger intellectual transformation in the ancient Mediterranean world. Practical knowledge of measurement and astronomy could become connected with theoretical questions about why particular relationships hold. Philosophy and mathematics therefore developed alongside one another rather than existing as completely separate intellectual disciplines.

Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes

The intellectual importance of Thales becomes clearer when we place him beside the two thinkers traditionally associated with the Milesian school: Anaximander and Anaximenes. Their theories differ, but all three are remembered for asking how the natural world could be explained through an underlying principle.

Anaximander moved beyond the identification of reality with a familiar physical substance by proposing the apeiron, an indefinite or boundless principle. His approach demonstrates how quickly the original question could become more abstract: perhaps the ultimate source of reality could not itself simply be one of the visible things found within the world.

Anaximenes, by contrast, associated the fundamental principle with air and attempted to explain differences in matter through processes of condensation and rarefaction. His proposal represents another attempt to connect unity and change: if one underlying substance exists, how can it produce the extraordinary variety of things we experience?

Seen together, these thinkers reveal philosophy functioning as an intergenerational argument. A question is proposed, an answer is given, the answer generates new difficulties, and another philosopher attempts to improve the explanation. The history of philosophy is full of this pattern.

In that sense, Thales' most enduring contribution may not have been a particular theory at all. It may have been the opening of a problem that other thinkers could inherit, challenge, and transform.

Was Thales Really the First Philosopher?

Thales is often called the "first philosopher," but the phrase needs to be handled carefully. It does not mean that Thales was the first human being to ask philosophical questions. Long before sixth-century BCE Greece, civilizations in India, Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and elsewhere had developed sophisticated reflections on existence, morality, order, knowledge, death, and the cosmos.

The title is better understood as a statement about the historical tradition of Western philosophy. Within the Greek tradition that later influenced Roman, Islamic, medieval European, and modern Western philosophy, Thales is traditionally placed at the beginning of the natural-philosophical investigation associated with the Pre-Socratics.

Even here, the boundary is not absolute. Greek philosophical thought did not suddenly appear fully formed with Thales, nor did it develop in isolation from the wider ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. Trade, travel, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and cultural exchange all formed part of the environment in which early Greek philosophy developed.

So it is more accurate to say that Thales occupies a traditional starting point in the history of Greek philosophy than to claim that he invented philosophy itself. That distinction is important because it allows us to recognize both the originality of the Milesian project and the much broader history of human philosophical reflection.

How Thales Helped Create a Metaphysical Problem

The moment a philosopher asks what is fundamentally real, the discussion begins moving toward metaphysics. Thales' search for an archê therefore has a surprisingly long afterlife. Later philosophers would disagree profoundly about whether reality is fundamentally material, immaterial, changing, unchanging, unified, plural, or structured by principles that cannot be reduced to physical substances.

Heraclitus would emphasize becoming and change. Parmenides would argue that genuine Being cannot undergo the kind of change ordinary experience appears to reveal. Plato would distinguish the changing sensible world from intelligible Forms, while Aristotle would develop an elaborate account of substance, matter, form, causation, and actuality.

These later theories are vastly more sophisticated than the cosmological proposal traditionally attributed to Thales. Yet they continue to circle around questions that can already be glimpsed in the Milesian project: What is ultimately real? What explains change? What makes the world intelligible? And can the many things we experience be understood through something more fundamental?

This is why Thales belongs not merely to the history of astronomy or ancient science but to the history of metaphysics. His importance lies partly in helping establish a question that philosophy would spend centuries making more precise.

Thales' Real Legacy Was a Method of Inquiry

It is easy to remember Thales simply as the man who said that everything came from water. But that interpretation makes his historical importance look smaller than it really is. His theory was eventually challenged and replaced, just as many philosophical theories have been. The more enduring legacy is the attempt to search for a rational account of nature rather than treating inherited explanations as beyond question.

That does not mean Thales possessed the scientific method in its modern form. He did not have modern laboratories, experimental instruments, mathematical physics, or the accumulated body of scientific knowledge available today. Calling him a modern scientist would therefore be misleading. What he represents is something earlier and more basic: the intellectual willingness to ask whether nature itself can be understood through discoverable principles.

That habit of questioning has an important philosophical consequence. Once an explanation is treated as something that can be examined rather than simply inherited, it becomes possible to disagree with it. Another person can propose a different explanation. The two explanations can be compared. Arguments can be developed. Weaknesses can be exposed. Questions can become more precise.

This is one of the reasons philosophy remains alive. Philosophical progress does not always mean accumulating correct answers in a straight line. Sometimes it means learning how to ask a better question.

What Thales Can Teach Us Today

We no longer need to explain eclipses, storms, or earthquakes in the same way that people in the ancient world did. Modern science has given us powerful mathematical and empirical frameworks for understanding natural phenomena. Yet the intellectual habit represented by Thales has not become obsolete.

We still inherit explanations from our families, cultures, institutions, political communities, schools, and social environments. Some are reliable. Some are incomplete. Some are simply familiar. The difficult intellectual task is learning to distinguish familiarity from evidence.

This is where the philosophical attitude associated with Thales remains useful. Instead of asking only, "What have I been told?", we can ask, "What is the reason for believing this?" Instead of accepting an explanation because it is traditional, we can ask what evidence supports it. And instead of replacing one unquestioned belief with another, we can remain willing to revise our position when stronger reasons appear.

The point is not that every old idea is wrong or that every new idea is better. Tradition can preserve genuine wisdom, while novelty can produce equally serious errors. The philosophical attitude is more demanding: neither tradition nor novelty should receive intellectual authority merely because of where it comes from.

In that sense, the question associated with Thales remains surprisingly modern: Is there a better explanation?

Why Thales Still Matters

Thales of Miletus did not leave behind a philosophical system comparable to Plato or Aristotle. We do not possess a book written in his own hand, and many details of his life and thought remain uncertain. Much of his reputation comes through later ancient testimony, which means that studying Thales also requires studying the ways later philosophers remembered him.

Yet uncertainty does not make him unimportant. On the contrary, the fragmentary nature of the evidence makes his historical role especially revealing. Thales stands near the beginning of a tradition in which thinkers increasingly treated questions about nature, reality, and explanation as problems that could be investigated through reasoned inquiry.

His answer — water — was only one answer among many. Anaximander replaced the familiar element with the more abstract apeiron. Anaximenes proposed air. Heraclitus emphasized change. Parmenides challenged the possibility of genuine change. Plato and Aristotle later transformed the entire philosophical landscape.

What survived through all these disagreements was the question itself. What lies beneath appearances? What makes the world intelligible? What is ultimately real? And how can human beings distinguish a convincing explanation from an inherited assumption?

Twenty-six centuries later, those questions have not disappeared. They have simply become more precise, more difficult, and connected to an enormous philosophical tradition. Thales' greatest legacy may therefore be neither water nor the eclipse nor any particular mathematical result. It may be the willingness to look at the world and ask: What is the best explanation we can give?
